[Poem verses]
Mitka Kunda, the company coward,
Escaped in secret from the front line,
Returned to his village, and showed up as a
Surprise guest of some of the village’s wealthy men.

The news spread through the village
That Kunda came back from the front line!
And the house of these wealthy men
Was crowded with family members.

Mitia, Mitia, come on, tell us
How it happened you got out of the service
Without your winding up in a court martial
Held by the Bolshevik chikisty?

Poster Notes: Chikisty (mentioned in poem) were members of the Cheka, the All-Russian Emergency Commission for Combating Counterrevolution, Speculation and Sabotage-- forerunners to the KGB. The names Romacha, Tiutiunnik, and Makhno (mentioned elsewhere in the poem) were commanders of militia units in Ukraine during the Russian Civil War. The bandit with the club is likely a characterization of Nestor Makhno, leader of the Black Army of Ukraine.
