Poster Notes: Kliment Voroshilov (1881-1969) was Commissar of Defense. He was also Marshal of the Soviet Union (despite his reputation for being a poor strategist) before and during the U.S.S.R.’s involvement in World War II. After Stalin’s death in 1953, Voroshilov was removed from a position of direct political power.

As the newspaper of the Communist Party of the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Pravda Vostoka (Truth of the East) began as Turkmenskaia Pravda (Turkmen Truth). In 1924-25, the newspaper name was changed to Pravda Vostoka and its circulation was expanded into Central Asia. Technically, Pravda Vostoka was the Eastern version of the Moscow-based Pravda newspaper.

Pravda Vostoka was formed in 1917 as Nasha Gazeta (Our Newspaper) and it was an organ of the Tashkent Soviet. In the early 1920s, its name was changed to Pravda Vostoka and it served as the organ for the Communist Party of Uzbekistan. Pravda Vostoka occasionally published posters. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017.
