Poster Notes: At left is The ABC of Communism (by Bukharin and Preobrazhensky, 1920), the most widely read political work of the Russian Civil War period. This poster was published in 1920 shortly after the formation of the Special Commission for Liquidation of Illiteracy (likbez) in the Red Army and Red Fleet under the Political Directorate of the Military Council that occurred in July that year. Likbez (likvidatsiia bezgramotnosti) was a campaign to "liquidate illiteracy" in the U.S.S.R. All people aged 8 to 50 years were required to be literate in their native language. Krasnoarmeets, a term used on the poster, was a military designation below the rank of non-commissioned officer in the Red Army.
