Poster Notes: During the Russian Civil War, the Red Army developed military schools, academies and command courses. In February 1918, accelerated artillery courses were organized in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), in Moscow and in other cities. The majestic building on the poster may allude to the one utilized in 1918 by the 1st Soviet Artillery of Petrograd for their command courses. Note the “Officer’s Command Course” sign above the columns. At the center of the poster is a hammer and plow, the symbol of the Red Army. The symbol was approved on April 19, 1918 but it was replaced by the hammer and sickle in August 1918.

Sergei Ivanovich Iaguzhinskii was a Russian and Soviet painter and graphic artist. Additionally, he was engaged in book illustration and worked in the applied and decorative arts. Born in Moscow, Iaguzhinskii began his formal education in the late 1870s at the Stroganov School for Technical Drawing. Redizdat (Editorial and Publishing Department) was established in 1921 by a decision of the Third Congress of the Communist International. It reported to the secretariat of the International’s Executive Committee. Redizdat was created to establish printing and publishing outlets in Soviet-controlled zones during the Russian Civil War.
