After World War II, the 1st Exemplary Typography was named in honor of Andrei Alexandrovich (A.A.) Zhdanov (1896-1948), a Soviet Communist Party leader. According to this poster, the workshop was placed under the auspices of the printing trust Soiuzpoligrafprom (All-Union Association of Printing Enterprises) that was printing for the state publisher Glavizdat (Main Administration of Publishing Houses, Printing Industry and Book Trade).
Historically, the 1st Exemplary Typography Workshop was the Sharapov-Sytin Partnerhip. Ivan Sytin, a book-publishing magnate, had his printing shop at Valovaia and Piatnitskaia streets in Moscow. In 1919, Sytin's plant was nationalized by the Bolsheviks.
