Gublit was the provincial office of GLAVLIT (Glavnoe upravlenie po delam literatury i izdatel'stv narodnogo komisariata prosvesshcheniia RSFSR), the Main Administration for Literature and Publishing of the People's Commissariat for Education of the RSFSR. While Glavlit oversaw the national work of censorship, Gublit offices were the censorship administrations for the provinces. Party committees oversaw each local administration.  Gublit is also referenced in English-language publications as the Regional Office of Literary Affairs.
