Vladimir Aleksandrovich Serov was a painter, poster artist and illustrator who primarily worked in the Socialist Realism aesthetic. In 1931, he graduated from InPII (Institute of Proletarian Visual Arts) and performed post-graduate work at InZhSA (Institute of Art, Sculpture and Architecture) where he served as an instructor from the 1930s until the 1960s. During the early 1930s, painters were organized into branches of the larger Union of Soviet Artists. The Union of Artists of Leningrad was established in 1932 as a creative and artistic union composed of artists and art critics. The painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) was elected its first chairman. The union also had an experimental lithographic workshop. Iskusstvo was the Art Publishing House (A.K.A. Visual Arts Publishing) that was created in 1936 from Ogiz-Izogiz (State Art and Literature Publishing House). It disseminated books and journals dealing with graphic design and the fine arts, and it issued numerous posters. Since the Iskusstvo banner was part of the State Printing Works in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and Moscow, its two main offices were located in those two cities.
