Born February 16, 1897, location unknown, Russian Empire; died 1991, presumably USSR
Avenir Iosifovich Chernomordik was a Russian and a Soviet graphic artist, book designer, and illustrator. Chernomordik grew-up in an artistic family. His father, Anatolii Chernomordik, was an artist during the Russian Imperial era. By the 1920s, Avenir Chernomordik was working in Moscow where he illustrated and designed books, political posters, and he collaborated on mass art projects. Together with the artist Iosif Ganf, the couple created the poster series "Labor Issues" and "Labor Discipline”. The series was issued by "Gostrudizdat" (State Publishing House of Labor Issues) with text written by the Soviet poet, Vladimir Maiakovskii. Chernomordik also designed posters for the Soviet tourist bureau, Intourist.
Of the numerous posters the artist designed during his long career, some of those titles are: "Forward to New Victories on the Front of Socialist Competition!"; "Down with Fistfights at the Factories!”; "The holiday is over - Monday is here. Time to work! Get up, slacker!" (all 1929); “To Fulfill the Five-Year Plan in Four Years Prepare Qualified Personnel in Production!" (1930); "Every Worker Correspondent is a Shock Worker and every Shock Worker is a Worker Correspondent." (1931), "We will Deal a Crushing Blow to Religion with Socialist Construction" (1931).
From the 1940s through the 1960s, he collaborated with the Moscow publishing houses Iskusstvo (Art), Ogiz-Izogiz (Fine Arts Publishing), Metallurgizdat (Metallurgy Publishing), and Transzheldorizdat (All-Union Publishing of the Ministry of Railways).
