Aleksandr Pavlovich Bubnov began his career in an art school in Atkarsk, Russia during the 1920s. When the school was closed due to the Russian Civil War, he continued his studies in the private studio of his teacher, N.I. Fedorov. In 1926, he moved to Moscow and enrolled in VKhUTEIN (Higher Art and Technical Institute) and during that time he became an active member of AKhRR (Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia). Iskusstvo was the Art Publishing House (A.K.A. Visual Arts Publishing) that was created in 1936 from Ogiz-Izogiz (State Art and Literature Publishing House). It disseminated books and journals dealing with graphic design and the fine arts, and it issued numerous posters. Since the Iskusstvo banner was part of the State Printing Works in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and Moscow, its two main offices were located in those two cities.
