In 1918, the Soviets nationalized the Moscow printing works of brothers Wilhelm Theodor Mehnert and Herman Julius Mehnert at 9 Bol'shaia Polianka (later named Soviet Street). The building housing the printer was first occupied by the Julius Kirsten printing firm. Upon its nationalization, the Soviets placed Mehnert printing under Geokartprom, a State-owed trust of the Commissariat of Defense that centralized government-mapping projects. Sibkraiizdat (Siberian Territorial Publishing House) existed from 1924 to 1930 and was formed on the basis of the Novosibirsk Book Publishing House. Sibkraiizdat functioned as both a publisher and a bookseller. Its history begins in the city of Omsk in 1920 when it was founded as Novosibirsk Book Publishing House -- the Siberian branch of the State Publishing House of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic.
